Hey there folks, I'm curious - at what point did you folks quit your jobs to work for yourselves.
I have a full time job but my part time hobby is getting closer and closer to my job's monthly income and well I guess I'm contemplating doing it full time you'd say - anyone else like me a few years back and made the jump to full time self employed as their residual incomes passed their job's income??

Re: At what point did you quit your jobs?
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 9:13 AMThere will come a day when you drive up to where you work and you just can't pull in the parking lot. Instead, you drive to a park and sit - and think - and finally make up your mind and go do it. The younger the better. -

Re: At what point did you quit your jobs?
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 2:10 PMCheck out a book called GO IT ALONE at the library. Its new, short and concise. The premise is that when you do go it alone you should do as much as your capable of and outsource the rest. Not a bad read and a new take on the "new" economy. -

I'm interested in doing some freelance writing or basically something that would allow me to telecommute...work from home....any suggestions on where i should start? how i should go about looking for something? -

Re: At what point did you quit your jobs?
Mon, June 13, 2005 - 4:47 PMIt depends on what you LIKE to do. Get a spiral notebook and write down where to want to be & what you want to do. Then write down where you are and working backwards reverse engineer all of the steps to get there. Be very detailed. Add to this daily. Step by step do the things to get yoru there & don't be surprised that you will change directions or take side trips along the way <sometimes there the most fun> but keep reminding yourself where and what. -

Re: At what point did you quit your jobs?
Mon, June 13, 2005 - 10:57 PMI actually just quit one of my part time jobs. I still have another part time job, but I'm basically going out on my own to start a private music teaching business. I'm scared, but I have a lot of confidence in myself. Still....it's easy to freak out. -

Re: At what point did you quit your jobs?
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 2:23 PMYou will know when the time is right. There will come a point when your desire to be in control will override any fears that you have...and that will be your motivation to really make it on your own. Discomfort is a big motivator - if you're too comfortable, you have no inner drive to change. If you're uncomfortable, or make the leap, you'll have the inner drive that you need to just "make it happen", and you will. You will find yourself simply doing whatever it takes to make your business work, cause you have no choice. So...are you in enough discomfort working for someone else that you're going to make the change? Or is staying there keeping you too comfortable so that you're not building your business to its full potential?

Re: At what point did you quit your jobs?
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 6:44 AMI feel that way about my small business. I have been doing it for over 30 years, and now I am sort of done with it. I do not feel like doing another business, and I am really trying to figuer out how to escape this mill of money making and how to retire.
Can I sell my small business? That's a big question. I work as a small contractor from home in a very stable local business.

Re: At what point did you quit your jobs?
Wed, August 10, 2005 - 9:37 PMHey Jay! well, I finally quit my full time job (that I had been doing since 1987) as a pharmacy technician in November of 2004 to pursue my dream...now, I only teach and perform, and it is feast or famine in this business...so I am pursuing my life long dream...
for over 18 years I have been studying and then teaching yoga part time, then 10 years ago I went back to dancing... in my mind over the past 3 years I have had a business plan to go non-profit and take what I know out into the community to help those who have been through domestic violence, alcohol & substance abuse, teen pregnancy/disadvantaged youths in homes...etc etc... over the past few months I have been visiting and dancing in nursing homes, youth homes, teaching yoga in battered women's shelters, community projects (and have even been hired by some on a monthly/biweekly or weekly basis to visit!) (I am very grateful to my x boyfriend who got me started doing this...)
this has truly been my life's dream and I hope within the next year I will be able to turn it all around and open an entire community center & outreach project... I have been thinking of returning to school and transferring my existing pharmacy credits over (if possible) and going for psychology/sociology to use as a base for this project...
I have really put the plan into full force these past few weeks and have gotten an amazing response already! I am in the process right now of filing for my non-prof status, and already have a good deal of grant writing done, it just needs to be tweaked to the needs of each separate proposal...
I have found a wonderful office space/studio close by and hope to have it up and running by the end of the month...so, here I go jumping off the deep end! I have tried pursuing my dream of bringing happiness and strength to others with other people, but the passion just wasn't in their hearts...they didn't want to pull their weight and get the ball rolling...so it is better if I do this on my own now...I have wanted to do it for as long as I can remember and I know it will be a great success...irregardless of the county's cutbacks for the arts, there are still grants available from private foundations & organizations to help fund my expenses for the project... and I am confident I can obtain them as I did before for another studio.
so, what do you think about my business plan? has anyone here ever done anything along these lines or have any advice?

Thu, August 11, 2005 - 8:50 AMnedra--
congratulations! your passion for this is wonderful! i have a lot in common with you. i quit my job at a domestic violence center 3 years ago (i worked there full time for 4) to perform music in nursing homes and teach private lessons. you are broader in your audience choices than i was, but that is going to really help you. the reward of making your audience happy is better than any paycheck. just keep calling and mailing out flyers to those organizations, and word will pick up about you. good luck!

Re: At what point did you quit your jobs?
Sat, August 13, 2005 - 11:22 PMI would rather be happily self employed, with much more modest means - than work for someone else making them rich and hating my life. For me, there has never really been a question of when. -

Re: At what point did you quit your jobs?
Tue, August 16, 2005 - 5:14 PMyes, I agree... there is no greater sense of self than succeeding at something you truly believe in.... especially when it is to help others..
it is just sad that I have had to cut all my ties and do this alone...but I think it is God's way of saying, this is a quest only for you to accomplish... perhaps the person I had partnered up with before just wasn't right for the job and fate had thrown me this chaos just in time before I jumped in and included them in my plan...I have learned the only person I can truly depend on, is myself... I will not let myself down, it is the only way to do this... I cannot sit and wait for things to happen, I just have to take the bull by the horns and run! and I hope you all do too! I wish you all great success and happiness and if prosperity comes of it wonderful, but what is most important is how many people you have helped...even if it is just one...

You'll Know
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 7:03 AMThis is a very personal question, and will vary from person to person. Some people methodically plan and transition smoothly over years, some gradually become dissatisfied, some break down or are fired and some go into business for themselves because they are, effectively, unemployable.
IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE in the matter, I suggest making a logical, multi-year plan with numbers, by which you gradually ramp up your future business and put as many systems as possible into place before you make (or even announce) the transition. Attend SCORE workshops, read books on systems, hang out with others and look for mentors, understanding that this may *not* be the right thing for you.
Some people are just not built to be employees, and some people are just not built for self-employment, and my experience is that one often cannot appreciate who is who without some major failures. -
